Recently, my friend and I made bread and butter pickles. I had never done pickling before. It is a bit of work but the results are so worth the effort. We were inspired by the beautiful pickling cucumbers at one of my favorite farm stands at the Roslindale Farmers Market, Boston.
We used an old family recipe belonging to my friend’s grandmother. We also looked online at other recipes for bread and butter pickles and combined ingredients we liked. Here are the ingredients we used (without measurements.)
BREAD AND BUTTER PICKLES
- apple cider vinegar
- mustard seeds
- celery seeds
Here are photos showing the steps.
I had a lovely day with friends strolling around the Forest Hills Cemetery on a beautiful September day. A few of photos from that day.
The drought in Boston has caused Lake Hibiscus shoreline to recede. Very sad.

Totally awesome add for Bernie Sanders. Worth a look.
I made these two pillows for my grand daughter, Frances, for Christmas.
My friend and I made this fleece throw for her partner. It’s his birthday tomorrow but I think she is probably going to give it to him tonight because she can’t wait to give him something that she made!
I loved making it with her. Wonderful to create something where you end up with something tangible–and warm and practical.
Yup. He is a geek!
